For those new to Virginia there are several state requirements regarding motor vehicles. The registration of a vehicle and the acquisition of license plates require that the resident must first title the vehicle. It is required that this be obtained within thirty days of moving to the state of Virginia. The Department of Motor Vehicles will issue the license plates and the decals as well as the actual registration card required.

Before operating a motor vehicle in the state of Virginia the vehicle is required to pass a yearly safety inspection.
