People’s opinion on how often to change their oil does vary. Cars actually spend most of their lives being used cars as they are only new for a short time. Now I knew one guy who swore up and down that he simply never changed the oil in his vehicles. Not for any reason would he ever have the oil changed. Needless to say I found this quite hard to believe and even rather amusing actually. I would ask him questions as to how he thought that this could be a good idea for the moving parts inside his engine block. Well he basically believed that the whole oil changing idea was some kind of a scam the oil companies use to get people to continually buy oil to replace the old oil in their used cars when they have it changed periodically.

These days I have the oil changed in my personal vehicles fairly often. Basically I will go 4,000 miles between oil changes. Now if I really do not travel much in a particular vehicle then this can take a while to get this many miles on the car. This is a nice savings in money and I have not had any adverse effects from this.

Cars Under 5000

I have spoken candidly to many mechanics and even owners of oil change businesses and ultimately the medium response is that having the oil changed in your vehicle every 3000 miles is not necessarily going to give you any benefits what so ever and these guys are pros in the business. Well it makes sense that the information amounts to around every 4,000 miles being the way to go as far as what I have been told. Ultimately the idea is to keep the oil fresh because once it has broken down somewhat it is going to become less effective at providing the protection for you engine which it is designed to provide.

Now this I was talking about was a guy who was fairly intelligent about things like designing gadgets that would solve people’s problems and as a matter of fact he held several patents to inventions he had actually invented so it was worth a listen to what he had to say I had always found.

But we would question him about his beliefs like what if used cars would leak a little bit of oil which would cause the levels to go down over time.

Well he would absolutely admit that he believed the oil should remain at a consistent filled level with out a doubt. However this would be as close to changing the oil he would ever go.

By replenishing the oil which would leak out he would essentially be generating a mixture of fresh oil and old oil and I thought that was a really good thing since he would not have changed it otherwise. We all thought that his opinions were very wrong regarding this issue of oil changing frequency which in his case was basically never.

I must say that his van eventually developed issues with the engine and those issues could very well have been the result of him never changing the oil in his vehicle. I personally believe that the oil in a cars engine needs to be changed at roughly every 4,000 miles or so. This is in part based on my own experiences with talking with oil change shop owners over the years. My dad owned an oil change shop many years ago and he still maintains that the oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles in used cars without exception.
